GET THE SKINNY
JANUARY 2007

Welcome to the first newsletter of the New Year. Hope you all had a great Holiday season and are ready to get back into the swing of things.

For those of you who weren’t able to make it to our Holiday Christmas Party you missed a good one. Hopefully this Christmas you will be able to make it. It was very different from the ones that we have had in the past. Go check out the website and see the pictures of all of us dancing. I know Nanette has one of me dancing but I have yet to see it.

Anyway, lets get back on track now that the holidays are behind us. We had our first support meeting of the new year this month and it was great. We had a nice crowd - some old faces and lots of new ones. Welcome to all you new ones that have decided to go ahead and change your life for the better. You will soon be the one telling new people the story of your journey, like us oldies do.

Support meetings are a very important part of this surgery, both before and after. Lots of doctors have them for this surgery but not too many are as lucky as we are to have Dr Allam at all of our meetings. We also have Pat, who is the best Nutritionist around as far as I am concerned. Both of these wonderful people give up one night a month in their busy schedules to spend it with us. I would like to say Thank You from all of us. I would also like to extend a Thank You to Nanette for being there and lining up some great guests that we have had lately. The last few support meetings have been very informative and the best ones that we have had in a long time.

Dr Allam, Pat and Nanette take the time out to put together a meeting with lots of information for our benefit. Dr. Allam always talks to us about the medical updates of this surgery. Pat is there for all our nutrition questions and Nanette is there for any new patients that are just starting off along with all of us for any insurance questions we might have.

Last month’s guest was Andrew Abrams, a psychologist from Riverhead. Some of Dr Allam’s patients have seen him for their psychic evaluation. This was my first time meeting him. I thought he was fantastic as I mentioned on the website. He talked about why some of us oldies might be turning towards other things now instead of just food. For example, some people that have had gastric bypass start to find other things to become addicted to. Some turn to drinking or even excessive shopping to fill that void that we have now, to just name a couple. He believes that we start to look for other things since we don’t have the food addiction anymore. So be aware of what you are doing? If you start to fall into a routine that you know is heading in the wrong direction then pick the phone up and call Dr. Allam’s office. Tell Nanette and she will steer you in the right direction of who to call to help you. Remember we all started out here with Dr. Allam for the same reasons - to lose the weight, get healthy, to start a new life or enjoy the life we have now. So don’t hesitate, the help is there for us.

Attending the support meetings is a great help too. We have had some very good ones. By not attending you might be hurting yourself further down the road. I am more than three years out and I love coming to the meetings. They helped me in more ways than one. These meetings are here for all of us, so even if you haven’t been to the meetings in a while, please try to attend. Don’t let the weather prevent you from coming. Try to make it, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Don’t forget to see Nanette about our Angel Program that is starting. Basically what that is, if you are interested, is having someone visit you while you are in the hospital. It is like a buddy system. Someone may live near you that perhaps you can meet. It comes in handy for any of us no matter whether we have had the surgery or if we are waiting to have it. I have met so many wonderful people through here and made some really great friends. Try it and don’t worry about anything. We are all here for the same reason. We all need someone to talk to that can really relate to what we are going through. As good as family and friends might be, if they haven’t walked in our shoes they they will not be able to relate 100% to what we are feeling. The more support we can have the better chance of us being successful.
