I am still on the fence about the procedure I want, whether it the lap band or RNY. I meet with Dr. Allam on Friday 1/19/07 for the first time. I have been to several surgeons thusfar. The reason I am so undecided is the lack of absorption of macro and micro nutrients with the RNY. I am hearing that some of the supplements (fat soluble) vitamins to be more specific, do not get absorbed.

I know the old procedure was the FOBI pouch and that is no longer used today; but can someone tell me if there have been any long term studies of the folks with the RNY procedure when it comes to nutrient absorption and where I can find this information? This is my last obstacle to research to aide in my decision. I have all my clearances in hand. HELP!

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi LAR,

The questions you have regarding absorbtion are valid. Those questions, and many others, will be answered by Dr. Allam at your 1st visit, and your subsequent visits, as well as our Nutritionist, Pat, when you have your consultation with her.

It is true that right after gastric bypass surgery, we do not absorb vitamins the way a "normal" person does. We supplement that by taking high doses of vitamins for the rest of our lives. We also do not absorb fat and calories the same way, either. So, that's the "trade-off."

If I understand what Dr. Allam has told us at many support group meetings, eventually, the newer section of the intestine begins to work much like the bypassed portion did. We begin to absorb things lower down in the intestinal tract. (The body is an amazing thing!) We still take our vitamins for life. That just makes sense.

We also check your blood every other month to be certain that you are getting enough nutrition. We look for anemia, low vitamin B12, proteins, as well as many other things. Our patients do very well! There is a lot of support, both at monthly check-ups, and monthly support group meetings. We work very hard to be sure that you are healthy.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to call anytime. The only silly question is one that goes unasked! See you on the 19th.
