Hello....
It has been about a month and a half since my surgery. I am down almost 50 lbs. So far so good....holidays and food shopping has been difficult...seeing everything and WANTING everything, but unfortunatly, knowing I can't.
My question is...when I eat, I sometimes over do it just a bit and I have that ill feeling in my gut. Is it better to fight the feeling or just throw up? And, if I do throw up, do I lose the protein and nutriants I just ate?

Hi Mohamed. I am now about 14+ months out and I still struggle with that question. Although I do not throw up as much anymore, I do have my days when I have the same problem. For me, in the early days, I would throw up everytime I needed to. Now I try to wait it out so I can absorb the food. I know it does help me if I "arch" my back a little bit, it allows the food to go down if it feels stuck. You really should ask Dr. Allam and see what he says. Anyway, I wish you luck on this journey and keep reading this message board.

Hi Mohamad,
I agree with Maryellen, ask Dr Allam. I am a week more than Maryellen, and there are still times that I get sick. When it comes on for me, I don't have a choice. I try and walk it out, but eventually it wins and when it does, I just get it over with and move on. Good luck to you and congrats on making such a wonderful commitment to yourself.........make sure you come to the support group meeting (very informative) and keep posting here, it will surely help you get through it............

Me personally I try to hold off. Sometimes it will pass but then there are times that it is so uncomfortable that you just have to let it go. When that happens to me it is not the entire meal that I lose it is just that last bit of food. So in answer to your question and this is just my opinion I am not a doctor. I think that we don't lose all the protein that we just ate if it is just that little bit that we end up throwing up.
Getting sick is something that will happen from time to time even way after being out so long after surgery. I am over 2 years out and it still happens to me. You might be asking why after 2 years. The reasons are pretty simple. I might have just eaten to fast and it just is not sitting right. That is when I try to hold out as long as I can in hopes that it will stay. Most of the time, it will. It could have also just been something that didn't agree with me and the only way to feel better is to let it go. So, that is what I will do. I do not go in there and force myself to throw up. If it is going to happen it will just come out.
After I have gotten sick I will tell you this that after about 30 minutes to an hour I will have something else to eat. To replace what I have lost. Something that has lots of protein in it.
Like the rest of us have said it is best to check with Dr Allam or even Pat the nutritionist. They are the professionals we are just people who have gone through the same thing and we can only tell you what we think feel or what happens to us. It might be the same as others but then again everyone is different. Good Luck and call Dr Allam or Pat if you need to.
