GET THE SKINNY
AUGUST 2005
Welcome to August’s Newsletter
This month at our meeting we discussed a few different topics. The first thing that Dr Allam discussed with us was about certain complications after surgery. Most of us know from reading the message board about Angelina’s aunt having the surgery. She had the surgery but developed a leak that evening. The nurses called Dr Allam and she had to go back into surgery. They needed to close up an opening. She did ok and then a day later she started to feel ill. They had to bring her back into surgery and open her up this time to repair another leakage. Dr Allam said that this is not something that happens a lot. It was just an unfortunate thing that happened. Angelina’s aunt is now at home and I believe is doing better. I would like to thank all of you on the message board who said a prayer for her.
Remember that leakage after the surgery is one of the risk factors of the surgery. As Dr Allam said, most leaks will close on their own. That is why it is very, very important not to have anything to drink until you have that leak test the following day.
We also talked about why some people when they have just had the surgery are hungrier then others. Pat said that it just happens to some people. If you find that this is happening to you after just having surgery call Pat. Do not take it upon yourself to change your diet. She will let you know what you can do.
The reason, according to Dr Allam, that we stay with the liquid diet in the beginning is to give our new stomachs time to heal. We don’t want to put any added stress on them right after surgery. So please try your best to follow the nutrition plan that Pat has given you. If you need to eat more cause you are hungry then call Pat first.
RECIPE OF THE MONTH
RICE PUDDING
2 cups cooked white rice (can be left-over rice)
2 cups 1 percent milk
1 stick cinnamon
1/2 cup egg substitute
3/4 cup sugar substitute (recommended: Splenda)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus additional for garnish
1/2 cup raisins
In a large saucepan, stir together rice and milk. Add cinnamon stick and bring to a low simmer over medium-low heat, whisking to keep from sticking. Add egg substitute and cook until just heated through (do not let eggs cook). Whisk in the sugar substitute and continue cooking over medium-low heat until mixture is thickened, about 10 minutes. Remove pan from the heat and remove the cinnamon stick. Add ground cinnamon and stir in raisins. Ladle rice pudding into 6 custard glasses or serving cups. Sprinkle the top with a pinch of ground cinnamon, if desired. Serve warm or refrigerate until chilled and serve cold.

I also can’t believe that this was done right under my nose at the Picnic. Wow! I need to really pay attention more. I just wanted to also say that my friend from Scotland wanted to thank you all for making him feel so welcomed at our picnic.
