Get The Skinny
April 2005

Welcome to Aprils Newsletter
I would like to start off this month by saying Welcome to all our new patients. We had a lot of new patients at our meeting this month. It was great to meet you all.

Also want to say thank you to all that came to our monthly support meeting. I know that it is not always easy to come but it is very important to try your best to make it.
At this months meeting we had a representative for the company that makes the staples that are inside us.
Also present, as always, were Dr Allam, Maria (psychologist), Pat (nutritionist) and Nanette (Office Coordinator). Thanks all for taking the time out for our meetings each month.

Now lets go over what was discussed at the meeting for those of you who were not able to attend.
Dr Allam basically opened the floor up to the new patients. He asked them what they would like to ask the professionals or other patients there.
A question was asked about what is the worst scenario that could happen. Like any surgery, of course, death is the worst scenario. He explained that with any surgery those things could go wrong. That is why it is so very important to read the paper work that is given to you. It states all the risk factors with this surgery. We also discussed leakage. This can be fixed either by trying to wait it out to see if it will close on its own but being watched carefully. Or by having to go back in to do whatever repair is necessary. Most times it heals itself. If you are told that you can’t drink anything then please remember that No Drinking means nothing at all. We also discussed about how some patients have difficulty swallowing and need to go back in to get stretched. This is not as bad as it sounds. According to Dr Allam the reasons this happens is because of scar tissues. It is an in and out procedure.
Other things were also talked about such as how long is the recovery period and when can you go back to work? Recovery period really depends on each person.
So remember to read all the information that is given to you. Attend support meetings and most of all make sure that you make and go to your follow up appointments. Those are all part of being successful after surgery.

Our Message Board
I want to thank all of you who have been participating on our message board. It is so great to see people posting there. This is our board and it is for our benefit to use it.
Also I want to welcome our new Professional - Maria “The Shrink” to our board. If you need a psychological question answered ask Maria. She can private message you or write the answer on the board for all to see. Remember that your question might be the same as someone else’s. So Maria replying on the board just might help someone else too. Welcome Maria.
