View Full Version : Moving along to solids too fast!!

Hey all!
I don't know , but it seems to me that all the newer post-op patients are moving on to more solid foods mor quickly than I remember doing.
I stayed with soup and baby food for like 2 months even three before I started to try tuna, or veggies, or egg salad. I never threw up not one time, I took it really slow, and I got through it. I didn't eat a protein bar until i was out 5 -6 months!
I think a few of us here are worried about strictures and thats because we are trying to move to solids too fast. I say slow it down, stick to the pureed foods for a bit. You will see a great difference , and down the road be able to tolerate what small amount of food we can have a little better, and it will be sooooo much more enjoyable!!
Tell me fellow long time losers.... what do you think??? Let's try to help these girls get rid of that fear!!!
GOD BLESS!!

I agree with you Angelina 100%. I stayed on liquids for a while then moved on to pureed. I stayed with those around 3 months.
It upsets me when I hear that people are worried about eating solid food so fast. Slow down take it easy. In time you will be able to eat it.
I think I tried tuna about 3 months after surgery. It just didn't sit with me. So I stayed away from it.
I believe that there is no need to rush into eating the solid foods. I think it is more our minds telling us to eat that cause that's what we are use too. Retrain your thinking. The longer you stay with liquids and pureed foods the better off you are. It gives your new stomach time to heal and hey it won't get stretched out.
New people it is hard no one said it isn't. Us old timers losers know we were there too. We remember.
Heck I am 17 months out and I still can get sick on some foods. Not often but it does happen. Most times I know why too. It is either I ate to fast or didn't chew my food well. So take it from us Slow Down. You will be happy in the long run.
Anyone else want to add to this subject?

Hi,
Just to let you both know, I moved on to pureed/soft foods with Pat's ok. I didn't start them on my own. Why is it that we're told not to compare our weight loss with eachother, but yet we can compare our eating habits with eachother?
Tuna fish is listed as a soft/pureed food in the paper work that Pat gave to me. As is crackers and pretzels.
I'm curious to know, are either one of you medically educated? I ask only b/c you 2 seem to know so much more than Pat. Why would she move me onto soft/pureed when according to you 2, I shouldn't be on them for months to come? I will be calling Pat on Monday to ask her this.

I guess you never saw me asking you to come to the chatroom so I will post a reply to your reply then.
Hello Stacy no I don't have a degree and I find that very offensive that you came back at Angelina and me like that.
You came on the board and you asked a question. We were just telling you what we did. If you ask questions then you have to be ready for our answers. Angelina or I never said anything about you eating it on your own. We never said that Pat was wrong either. Why are you saying things like that? You asked for help when you posted about your problem. I spoke with you in the chat room the other night when it was happening. I told you to call Dr Allam not to wait. See what he says. When you or anyone ask about the surgery and the food stages or things to that matter we try to help by saying what we did. No it doesn’t make it right but it might help. After all we all had the same surgery.
No one said that Pat was wrong and yes she has the degree and we might not have it, but we had the surgery that does make us aware of things.
To turn around and speak to us like that was very rude of you. If you ask questions here be prepared for any answers you might get on it. We are here on this message board to help one another not to fight with each other.
If we want to say that we feel people are eating to soon we have that right. It is our opinion that’s all. The other thing is who even mentioned your name? Angelina started a separate thread about it. No one said any names. Again we were voicing our opinions.
You wrote in the thread and I quote “Why is it that we're told not to compare our weight loss with each other, but yet we can compare our eating habits with each other?” What’s that all about Stacy?
The reason we are maybe told and it’s not written in stone either but maybe it because everyone loses differently.
As far as the eating well we all should be doing the same thing at a certain time. Hey but that doesn’t mean what works for one is going to work for another. I’m sure Pat would tell you that also. Also Yes Pat might have told you to go to the next step but I’m sure if you called her and told her the problems you were having I bet she would have said slow down or something like ok then lets step back a step. Stacy just because it is written that you move on to then next step doesn’t mean that you or someone else might not be ready. Pat will tell you it is a hit and miss. Heck just like some people can tolerate sugar and some can’t.
I just want you to know that I really found your reply to Angelina and myself uncalled for. We are here to help one another not to attack on each other, Oh and if you don’t want the help then don’t ask. I'm sure the people on this message board will agree that we are here to help and we all ask questions and try to give the best answers that we know.

AMEN REGINA!!!
We are here to help eachother... and if you think you can't handle some truth than please do not post questions for us.
My thread was not geared toward any one particular person.... I help lots of people through this site and have noticed this pattern occuring quite a bit lately in post-op Patients. Through MY EXPERIENCE only... do I feel that I am "qualified" to express my opinon. I have been there... REGINA has been there...i feel we are kind enough to share our experiences so you may have an easier time.
So please don't WASTE our time by posting when you really do not want the support we truly give with all our hearts.
I feel so slighted, and that your post was beyond rude and disrespectful Stacy.
I am puttting an end to this as of now, and will not answer another post on this subject. I only wanted to explain how I feel. 23_30_115.

I just read the posts and I would like to add my 2 cents. All that was said here was that maybe things are moving a little to fast. Yes Pat may say to move to the next level, but that doesn't mean that a person can't have a reaction to that step. If you try something new and it doesn't sit right, go back to food that you were eating without a problem and see if the condition that you are experiencing goes away. If you are now having a problem with foods you were doing good with, then you might have a stricture and would have to see someone to fix it. Personally I liked Dr Georgeopolis (sp) If anyone is interested, I have his phone number somewhere. Like Regina and Angelina said we are here to help and nothing we say is written in stone either. We are just sharing our experiences.

Thank you Bobbie for your 2 cents!!
Did you have a stricture? How come Dr. Allam didn't take care of it? who is this other DR you spoke of?? TA_CLAP33.

Oh whats 2 more cents.........I think that Stacy took this post too personal. However I do not think after reading all the posts, that it was posted with anything but concern for ALL new patients. I too am fairly new at this, and if I post a question for some clarification, it is because most people on the site have walked in my shoes or are about too. The more we share about the changes and nonchanges in our diet, bodies, mind etc the better we will all make it through. From a medical point (& I mean education), Pat may have told some to move on to the next stages (me included) for whatever reason, but from experience, if those foods don't agree with your new body, common sense will tell you to stop eating them. Just for the record, Atkins bars are not on stage two (they are not pureed soft food)....this is only my opinion. I do realize that the foods are boring in the first stages, but we all knew this going in. I have to agree with all involved, this is a family we have here, and why ask for support from others experience if you don't want it, it may not be what you want to hear, but when we ask questions, it is for other peoples (not doctors) opinions.
I personally will keep on asking for info from the more experienced LOSERS.
Well, maybe that was more than 2 cents worth, but I felt it need to be said.

no I didn't have a stricture but I did have a problem swallowing pills in the first 5 months I couldn't even swallow a baby aspirin so I went to a gastro dr and he did an endocope and stretched the opening a little. His name is Dr Georgeopolis and he was the dr that dr allam recommended. Congrats on reaching the 90 lb mark. xxx Q_DANC117. Doing the happy dance now

What a great family we have here. I want to say thanks to all who have helped out other patients on this board.
I know that I have gotten lots of support from here. I also know that attending the support meetings along with writing the newsletter and heck kind of running this board has kept me on track.
I look at all of you as part of my growing family. You are all the ones that can really understand what we go through being over weight and then having the surgery. We can all relate to one another. Yes we might be in different stages but that is what makes it better for us. Someone who is just starting out can ask us questions. We can tell them how we did it or what we did.Just lets keep in mind we are all here for the same reason. That is for each other’s support. No question is dumb and the answers we give are the answers from what we experienced.
Thanks everyone you are all a great big part of my success.

moving along to solids too fast reminds me of the time I tried mushed up fish that was too dry, and I was in a rush. I felt like I was choking, but it passed. Just seeing that line reminds me to slow down and take care when nourishing myself. I didnt come this far to get sick I have all the time in the world to switch to solids and sloww seems to have worked better. thanks.

I'm only 5weeks out,my paperwork says I can move on to soft flaked fish, turkey roll ups etc.I'm afraid to eat...everything makes me nauseous, and leaves a tin taste in my mouth. I'm sick to death of broth and baby food, please give me some ideas of alternate foods that won't make me so uncomfortable that i have to sit up for hours to feel better. Also, what is a "sticture"???

Have you tried mashed potatoes (water them down with chicken brooth), or scrambled eggs? Maybe egg salad, shredded chicken salad (thighs, i like the dark meat, it goes down easier for me), maybe shrimp (a couple, not overcooked), or chunks of cheese........most salads or cheese can be eaten with crackers. You can try whole wheat toast with ricotta cheese and sauce on it.
i have now become a big whey protien junkie. the test tube ones that Pat had at the meeting (25 gms per serving) i take one every morning, and eat a string cheese with it.........it helps get my protien in.
I hope this helps........good luck ~`elaine
