The July meeting had about 30 people in attendance. The meeting started out with an announcement about the New Bariatric Unit at Southampton Hospital. The grand opening is scheduled for around mid September and will be announced on our website when more details come in. Our local unit has been given provisional approval as a “Center of Excellence” by the Board of Accreditation and that is no small feat!!! This is due to the determination of Dr. Medhat Allam and his dream to provide us with a state of the art facility. We would like to thank Dr. Allam, Pat, Linda, and all the many others that have been so diligent in providing us with this most needed sanctuary.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/LRJD/linda-gordon-1.jpgLinda Gordon, our Program Coordinator gave us a handout with a few weight related topics the first of which was titled, “A HEAVY BURDEN, Obese kids do worse at school”. The second topic was called, “Reduced-calorie diet may extend life span, study says”. The final article told us about how “Hospitalizations double for children with obesity”.

We had a couple of guest speakers at our meeting, the first of which was EmilySmith, MS Genetic Counselor and she talked Obesity and Genetics. Emily works for Southampton Hospital and is mostly in the new Breast Center, where she uses a person’s personal and family history to see if they possibly may be at a higher risk for cancer.
Emily told us that findings show that approximately 70-80% of obesity may be due to genetics. They are still trying to pin down which genes are involved and what effect they have on weight.
Thanks, Emily for a very interesting topic, and please feel free to come back anytime.

Our next guest was Carol Celik, who is a Registered Nurse and Personal Trainer. Carol specializes in Bariatric Surgery Clients and has had the Gastric Bypass herself, so she has walked in our shoes and understands the special needs that may come up for a WLS patient. Carol may be reached at (631) 846-1488 and you may get a free Consultation and Assessment if you wish. I believe Carol will be a part of the group meetings and will be there for any questions you may have about this related subject.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/LRJD/marylee2-1.jpgMary Lee Hasbrouck, licensed Clinical Social Worker whom we also had the pleasure of meeting again. Mary Lee has had WLS, will be joining our group meetings, and brings with her a very fresh, positive approach to any concerns that may arise before, during, or after your weight loss journey. Welcome, Mary Lee, I am sure you will be an asset to the group!!!

There were a number of new attendees at the meeting last night, so when we went around the room for our normal introductions and personal stories, they had a chance to listen and ask questions and hear first hand our experiences with WLS.

Thank you all for attending, and if you couldn’t make it, please try to come to our next meeting in September. There will be NO AUGUST MEETING. In place of our August meeting, we will be having our 4th Annual Picnic.
Thank you,
Jamie
