We would first like to welcome Dr. Allam back from another successful mission, which was in India this year. He and his group of dedicated doctors and nurses have again left the world in a better condition than before they arrived.

Welcome to our newsletter!!! What a turnout we had for the February Support Group Meeting for the Hamptons Center for Bariatric Surgery. There were about 41 people in attendance including the two guests and Dr’s. Allam and Lieberman.

http://forums.hamptonbariatric.com/image.php?u=2&dateline=1107430336 Dr. Allam introduced our first guest, Linda Gordon, who is our Program Coordinator and will be a liaison between the hospital, the doctor, the nutritionist, and the patient. Linda will be there to help walk you through the procedure and answer any questions before and after the operation, and will be in direct contact with Dr. Allam if needed. Linda will help ease the whole process for the patient by seeing them before and after surgery and just making it less stressful in the long run. Linda will also give you handouts about what to expect after surgery and any nutritional information needed for a complete recovery. Welcome aboard Linda we look forward to working with you!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/LRJD/linda-gordon-1.jpgLinda Gordon may be reached between the hours of 7 to 3 Monday thru Friday @ 726-8376 or 726-8537. If you get her answering machine please leave her a message along with your phone number and she will get back to you as soon as possible.

Our next guest was Craig Homis, MSPT who along with Dr. Allam and Southampton Hospital are developing a supervised exercise program for patients who have undergone weight loss surgery. The program will involve scheduled small-group exercise sessions of one hour in duration with a certified athletic trainer. The program will be individually tailored to meet the needs and abilities of each client.

Regina will post the pamphlet on the message board and please, we are looking for any input from you so we can work out the final details. If you have any input, Craig may be contacted at: chomis@southamptonhospital.org.

The next portion of the meeting Dr. Allam presented a very interesting article that was titled: “Evidence Continues to Show Safety of Bariatric Surgery”.

The studies took place from January 1990 to April 2006 and involved more than 85,000 patients. The study showed that less than 0.3% of people who undergo bariatric surgery in the United States die as a result of their operation. (Approximately 3 patients in a 1000) In comparison, about 3.9% of patients die within one month of aortic aneurysm repair (approx. 4 patients in 100), 10.7%, and 9.1% die respectively after craniotomy and esophagectomy (approx. 11 and 9 patients per 100) In terms of mortality, that makes bariatric surgery the safest of the five most commonly performed surgical procedures in the United States.

The results are impressive despite having patients who have much higher surgical risks than average patients, bariatric surgery renders effective and safe results, safer, in fact, than procedures we take for granted, like hip replacement surgery.

Analysis showed that mortality from bariatric surgery has declined in recent years. Only 0.19% of patients died within 30 days of surgery compared with 0.53% of patients in studies released between 1990 and 1994.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/LRJD/NEW2DrJon-1.jpgDr. Jon Lieberman introduced the next portion of our meeting about “Binge Eating” by telling us about the five ways to avoid binge eating and the first being:
1) Become a better problem solver.
2) Soften your “all or none” thinking.
3) Learn emotional regulation (deal with feelings without using food).
4) Eat according to nutritional information.
5) Look forward to things beside food.

The main idea here is to “You being in control of food as opposed to food being in control of you”.

Binge Eating is defined as eating a large amount of food in a short amount of time.

The next portion of the meeting was our “Open Forum”, which everyone seems to enjoy. This is the point where we go around the room and everyone shares their stories and thoughts and is a very informative part of the meeting for anyone that has any questions about either operation. A lot of questions get asked and answered, and there is no better way to learn than from the people that have been through the experience. This is especially helpful for the newbie’s and curious.

Time was running out at this point of the meeting, but Dr. Allam gave a speedy presentation of the slideshow he prepared to show us his adventures in India and the wonderful people of that country. Again, we would like to thank Dr. Allam and his dedicated team for all that they do for the underprivileged of the world and we know that they will remember your efforts for a long time to come. THANKS AGAIN, DR. ALLAM, you are one of a kind!!!
We would like to thank you all for a great turnout last night and please remember to post and let us know your feelings!!!

Jamie
