SUPPORT GROUP MEETING
AUGUST 19, 2008
The Support Group Meeting started with Dr. Allam, Regina, and Aleeya showing us how to navigate around our website. We have been trying to show people how easy it is to post comments and create different profiles so we can individualize them to our liking. A few of the topics covered were: registration, creating a Ticker Factory banner, how to create a new post, how to add to a previous post, how to customize your user profile, how to cr eate a photo album, and how to customize your signature and avatar.
We hope that with this new information that more of you will post and comment on the topics at hand and add your ideas to the forum. It does get easier the more you do it and of course, if you have any questions please contact Regina, Aleeya, or Jamie, and they will try to clear up any problems.
The second portion of the meeting we welcomed
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/LRJD/Dr%20ALLAM%20FOLDER/DrRuss-1.jpgDr. Russ L’HommeDieu, DPT, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and what a story he had to tell us!! Dr. Russ started at a weight of 410 lbs. and went up and down like the rest of us. He was told by his physician that if he didn’t have bariatric surgery that he could die!!! He had the Lapband and lost around 200 lbs. and was doing well until he got a massive infection (that was not related to the lapband) and had a white blood count (WBC) over 40,000. A burst appendix has a WBC of only 20,000, so this shows the severity of the situation!!! He needed emergency surgery and in the process he had to have his band removed. Statistics show that around 99% of patients that have the band removed will gain weight back and he was not ready for this!!!
He developed 4 key concepts to live by and they are:
AWARENESS, ACCEPTANCE, ACTIVENESS, ADAPTATION.
Dr Russ never liked the term exercise, so to make it a little easier to live with he re-named it “becoming more active”. He doesn’t believe that you should burn out exercising, but you should take it slow at first and gradually build up as you get stronger, because he feels that “The whole purpose of the first day of exercise is the second day of exercise”!!!
Dr. Russ decided to focus on helping local charities as a way to keep motivated in his quest to stay healthy. Dr. Allam’s wonderful mission helps seriously impoverished areas all over the world get free surgical aid where it is desperately needed. The organization is called International Surgical Mission Support (http://www.ismission.org/).
There are ways you can get involved with walks that are geared for the non-professional interested in helping obesity. The Obesity Action Coalition organizes a walk from obesity that you can join if interested. Check out, (http://www.walkfromobesity.com/) to see if you can help!!!
Dr. Russ also has a few culinary classes available at Suffolk County Community College and his office that deal with nutrition and health. His address is, www.NewLifeInProgress.com. Please check them out.
Thank you Dr. Russ for a very informative presentation!!!
The third part of our meeting
http://forums.hamptonbariatric.com/image.php?u=2&dateline=1107430336Dr. Allam discussed “Goals and Weight Loss”. He explained that where he was brought up there was a lot of anxiety and depression. Everyone walke d in the same rut and it was next to impossible to get out. He realized that if he were to get out he would have to set goals. Dr Allam wanted not just to have a goal, but to set more goals after each one was reached so he wouldn’t reach a stalemate and be able to stay motivated. This is a good lesson to live by, and we all see how successful Dr Allam is and passes that wisdom on to others.
The last part of the meeting went to general discussion and the main topic seemed to be about protein. We talked about the different ones that we used and if we liked them or not. If you have any comments on your type of protein or how you get more into your diet please feel free to post your comments on our message board @ www.hamptonbariatric.com.
Thanks for a wonderful meeting.

As mentioned above we demonstrated how to register and post on the board. I have been accepting a few new registrations. How about posting a little bit about you this way we can get to know you. Ask us any questions that you might have tell us which surgery you are thinking of having. We are all here for the same reason and that is to help each other on this journey.
SOUTH HAMPTON OFFICE
I would like to say thank you to everyone who has filled out the Patient Interviews. I put together the book and it is now in Dr, Allam's South Hampton office. It is there for all the new and old patients to read. If you would like to fill, one out it is not to let to do so. Just contact me and I will send you a blank interview if you can’t find it on the board.
I also put together a photo album from this year’s picnic. That is also at the South Hampton office. I plan to add more pictures to that. I have some from past support meetings and guest that we have had in the past.
I am also planning on making up a before and after album for the office so if you have any before and after pictures of yourself please email them to me or bring them to our next meeting. I will return all photos to you. If you can provide your date of surgery and how much you have lost along with your photos, I will put together your two pictures with your information for the album. Thank you.
That ends this month’s Newsletter. We hope that you will try your best to attend our next support meeting. Until then have a Healthy and Safe month.
