Hi, everyone I am happy to announce that we will be going over on how to use this board on Tuesday August 19 at our monthly support meeting. As long as the Internet is working, we will take time out to do this.
I would also like to tell you that we will be having a guest speaker who has been to a few of our meeting already. His name is Dr. Russ L'HommeDieu, DPT he had the band surgery. So he is a person who can tell you his story and what a great story it is. If you are thinking of having this surgery, you definitely should not miss this meeting.
Dr Russ is also involved Paddlers for Humanity Sea Kayak Fundraiser. Paddlers for Humanity is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization based in East Hampton, NY.
I have attached the email that Dr. Allam and I recieved. Please take the time out to read this. It will explain to you how he got involved in this great event.
This September, I will be paddling to Block Island from Montauk. It is a charity event and some of the proceeds will go to Dr. Allam's International Surgical Missions - (How cool is that???) May I come to speak at the next support group about the event??? I have a quick program I give on how to stay motivated to exercise by adding the higher purpose of a common good - like fundraising. Make no mistake, this is a grueling event and it takes months of training - which keeps me well motivated to exercise.
Below is an article for your newsletter or for the blog (i don't know how to post) on the subject. I have also provided all the info on the paddle.
Exercise is a word so caustic, that it has been known to cause eye and skin irritation simply by reading it in a magazine it or by being within earshot of someone saying it. In fact, the word is so bad that the use of it has been banned in many roadside bars, fast food drive-thrus and Chinese buffets throughout the United States.
Obesity is not a disease caused by lack of exercise, it is a disease of inactivity. Human beings are designed to move. Movement keeps our joints lubricated, muscles strong, hearts healthy and brains active. In fact, it has been my professional observation that when people stop moving they start dying. Since the dawn of the industrial revolution, our labor saving technology has continued to evolve. We now have machines that can do just about everything for us. We no longer HAVE to physically do anything in order to survive and as a result, most people move a whole lot less. Think about it. When was the last time you got off the couch to change the channel on the TV?
No matter how severe your weight issue, every time you add movement into your life, you will be moving closer and closer to the life you want and deserve. Your objective should NOT be to "exercise", but simply to be more active.
Now, doesn't "be more active" or "move a little more" sound better than "you gotta exercise"? The words that go through your mind as you set your sights on a new goal are hugely important as to whether you will actually complete that goal. By removing the dreaded word exercise, you will be building a better story around the concept of increasing your activity. With the right mindset, you may never have to hear the word exercise again. Consider it a total re-write of the story you currently tell yourself about exercise. Actually, this is much more than just better story telling. It is a kinder, gentler way to get started on the road to Betterness (sm). Betterness is a word of my design that simply gives you permission to stop straining for perfection and start just working to be better. Betterness smashes the old "all or nothing" (mostly nothing) mindset that is keeping your butt on that couch. It is a kinder, gentler approach to life change and if you stay with it, you will see a whole new life begin to emerge. My new life started as a 410 pound man peddling a Schwinn Airdyne Stationary bike for just 5 minutes, every other day.
So, by just moving a little more each day, you will become more physically fit and able. What I am proposing is that you simply begin moving more than you do right now. Don't start by thinking about running endlessly on a treadmill that goes nowhere, that's sounds more like Hell than Betterness! You don't need to go to the gym to move more. One 5 minute walk would be a great start. If you simply make moving more part of your life story, you will become healthier.
Getting up and moving (formerly known as exercise) provides you with an upward spiral of unseen benefits. Just by moving more than you do right now gives you a boost to begin and continue with your weight loss. The very act of moving enough to raise your heart rate (even a little) has been shown to reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and stoke just to name a few. If you are looking for a miracle drug, just get yourself moving. Time and time again, research shows it to be the most valuable tool in maintaining your weight and emotional well being. Did you know that exercise (oops) "moving more" is considered a treatment for depression. Even if you are overweight, moving more will make you healthier and happier. But, don't forget, the research shows, the more you move the less you weigh. It is a proven fact.
If any of you have a bad case of insomnia one morning and are up at 4am, you can come and watch me rip along the waterways of the North Fork on my kayak. I love it! I enjoy it so much, I can't even call it exercise (not that I would). Make no mistake, though, I do manage to "elevate" my heart rate. I actually paddle hard enough to exceed the speed ofan average 30 foot sailboat under full sail. I know that because I have confused many a sailor as I whip on by them. The cardiovascular benefits are undeniable, the scenery is impossible to beat and the core muscle training is awesome. By the end of the summer I can not even fit into my shirts because my chest has become so developed. The core strength and flexibility the sport provides me improves every aspect of my physical abilities, especially my balance.
When I kayak I have some unbelievable workout partners, ducks, geese, loons, and an occasional striped bass will crest the water to say good morning. There is no better way to work out then to do something you love to do. My workout room is a million miles long and a million miles across, and I will never get to see the whole thing; that is pretty amazing. The peace and euphoria that this brings me sets the tone for my entire day and can last for days.
Exercise and the Art of Giving
I define "Action Giving" as the act of giving by doing something physical. It is not only good for you but it gives you the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of others. It is an awesome way to stay motivated to keep your body moving. Yes, even I, with my professed love for kayaking can use a motivational boost. Remember, the key is not just to move more but to keep on moving more.
Who would have believed that the same 400 pound man struggling to stay on an exercise bike for 5 minutes would cross almost 20 miles of Open Ocean in a 15 foot kayak? Believe it! I did just that this past summer and I am doing it again this year. The paddle for humanity is an 18 mile open ocean paddle from Montauk to Block Island. It is held this year on either September 13th or September 14th, dependent on weather conditions. I must raise a minimum of $3000 to participate and the funds raised will benefit several worthy causes including Dr. Allam's International Surgical Mission Support.
It was a cold, rainy and windy start to the kayaking season and I don't mind telling you that I was losing my kayaking MoJo (Motivational Joy -- not to be confused with the Cuban Spice also known as MoJo.) I remember too many mornings at the beginning of the season where I just stood on the beach, cold and wet, only to turn around and go home. I did nothing to move more that day and I felt it. It was a bad habit in the making. My MoJo was rescued by the Paddle for Humanity. All I needed to do to get myself going was to think about all the people whose lives might change if I could make it to Block Island. I knew the only way for me to endure this grueling 18 miles at sea was to get my butt into that boat and paddle - every day. Since getting started is always the hardest part, it was all I needed and soon I was blissfully ripping along like always. As I train, I stay motivated by getting sponsors. I know that people are depending on ME and I am not going to let them down. I know, that on that brisk morning in September, when I finally leave the safety of Montauk for Block Island, I will not be alone. I will have all of the collective energy of my sponsors and their beneficiaries behind me. If you don't think that is powerfully motivating, it is only because you have not experienced it yet. Give it a try. You don't have to put your life at risk. There are many good causes that will get you moving. Perhaps the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is the most familiar to you. Did you know that the Obesity Action Coalition and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery jointly organize the walk from obesity? (
http://www.walkfromobesity.com/ )The proceeds from this event support obesity research and obesity advocacy. The events are held all over the country at various times which gives you plenty of opportunities to get involved. I encourage you to find ways of Action Giving and the Walk from Obesity is one cause that supports us all. Try moving for the greater good, your exercise MoJo will love you for it.

Doctor Russ is collecting donations for the Paddlers for Humanity Sea Kayak Fundraiser. Paddlers for Humanity is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization based in East Hampton, NY they raise funds and awareness for worthy, non-profit organizations that focus on community, education, or health. The grants are awarded on an as-needed project basis.
Paddlers for Humanity also provides support to individuals who need immediate medical or economic assistance due to emergencies or catastrophic events, and bestows scholarships to students in need of financial aid.
The funds are raised through a series of paddling adventures and challenges in which donors sponsor the participating paddlers.
Who We Are: In 2005, a few strong-willed paddling enthusiasts gathered together and made a decision to challenge themselves and to enhance the lives of numerous people who would benefit from their hard work and good will. The paddlers determined that they would raise money for a charity by paddling from the Montauk Lighthouse to Block Island, a distance of 18 miles. The paddlers went through rigorous training and directly solicited donations from their friends and families. The 17 kayakers, standup, and prone paddle boarders raised an impressive $90,000.
Following this, the founders decided to make the paddle an annual event. The 2006 paddle was equally successful. In 2007, a 9-mile paddle was added allowing for more casual participants, increased awareness and the opportunity to raise more funds. The two 2007 paddles raised $117,000.
The paddles have generated nearly $300,000, an inspiring amount of money considering the grassroots nature of the event and that a handful of volunteers are solely responsible.
Montauk to Block Island 18-Mile Open Ocean Paddle: Montauk to Block Island 18-mile open ocean paddle, held this year on either September 13th or September 14th, dependent on weather conditions. Each paddler must raise a minimum of $3000 to participate. This paddle will begin at 7:00 am and will take approximately five hours. The funds raised will benefit the Children's Learning Center of the East End, www.tclcee.org, International Surgical Mission Support, www.ismission.org, Miracle House, www.miraclehouse.org, and PRASAD, www.prasad.org.
Dear Sponsor,
All proceeds will help fund the above named organizations. More info about each organization is available on the attached PDF file. You can sponsor for any amount you wish and you don't have to pay right now. After the Fundraiser, I will contact (hound) you to talk about the trip and collect your contribution. You can also go to www.p4h.org and donate there – Please remember to donate as my sponsor! All contributions are tax-deductible.
