Hello Pat. I am confused on something. I was told (Do not remember by who or where) that we, as bypassers, are not allowed to eat corn.
I know that we may have cornmeal, as it is ground up already, but what foods are we NOT supposed to eat because of binding or blockage possibilities???? Theresa Cahill

Hi Theresa,

I'm Jamie and I am a Lapbander and I just wanted to say that there were a lot of By-Passer's and Lapbander's eating corn at the picnic yesterday. I believe that when they say not to eat corn that it means until your stomach heals and gets back to more of a normal state and can tolerate things that you can't when you're first out. As you know everyone is different and some may be able to tolerate certain things and some may not, and even day by day you may not be able to do it one day, but you can't the next. Another note is that there really isn't a lot of nutritional value to corn, but on the other hand, there really isn't anything quite as good as the sweet corn we have here this time of year.

I would still wait for Pat's answer, because she is the professional, but there were a lot of "used corn cobs" in the garbage yesterday!!!!!

Hope this helps,

Jamie

I am a bypasser. I'm out 8 months and I can tell you I heard the same thing, but then was told otherwise and had fresh roasted corn on the cob about 2 weeks ago. I had no problem eating the whole ear of corn. Just remember to chew, chew, chew!

I agree with you Jamie. I think when we first have a surgery that corn is one of the forbidden foods.

I know I only started eating certain things when I was about two years out. The first two years or even two and half years I didn't have anything that I wasn't supposed to have. Then eventually you start trying things that you haven't had. Some may go down without a problem then some you might have a problem eating. Until this day I still have problems sometimes with some food and I am close to being five years out this September.

Its like you said what you have today that stays down might not stay the next time. It is something I have come to live with and we all will have to for the rest of our lives. There is one food now that I just stay away from and that is Chinese. No matter how many times I have tried it over the past 3 years, it has only stayed down maybe three times. So, to me it is not worth trying anymore. I rather do without then to get sick cause I ate it.

As Jamie said wait until Pat answers you. We are just telling you our experiences with corn.

By the way, one of those cobs in the garbage yesterday was not mine. I never had one. :( I did take a bite of my daughter cause she said it was sweet. ;)

I have a dozen on order and will be picking it up at the meeting this month.:D LOL

Hi All,
Weather you are a "bander" or bypass" patient corn(whole) should be avoid for about six months after surgery. This has to do with the digestion of it.
