As a gastric bypass patient I don't get that physical hunger that some do. What I get is a feeling of lightheadedness and just plain empty that tells me I have to eat. I'm having trouble making it from my 1:00 lunch to my 8:00 diner without feeling my body's way of telling me it's time to eat. I used to be able to eat dinner around 6:00, but now with my work schedule I only have time for maybe a snack. Any suggestions for a satisfying, blood sugar regulating, low fat and low calorie snack? I hate to add anything at all, but I'm just miserable by the time I eat and I can't eat fast or I throw up. HELP!

Isabel

PS: It really needs to be portable and require no preparation.

Hey, Isabel that is way way to long to go before dinner. What I would suggest is maybe trying to eat breakfast a little later then you usually do. This way then you can eat lunch later, which won't cause you to have such a large time laps in between those to meals.
If you are not able to do that then maybe a protein drink or fruit to hold you over. It sounds like you are bottoming out by the time dinner comes around.

If none of that helps call Pat and ask her when you should do.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi everyone,

I would think that by the time that you get those effects, that it is not a good thing. You should set a time everyday to have that small snack or supplimental drink. If you get into the habit, you will ward off those symptoms before they occur. With all of the energy bars and snacks out there, you should find something that is portable and enjoyable all at the same time. You will just have to try them and find a few that are to your liking. Keep a couple of ideas going so you don't get bored with your choices. Once you make it a part of your schedule it will be something you look foward to and not just another chore. It will take some trial and error to find that "elusive snack", that is low in everything and still has some sort of taste and appeal to it!!! Maybe Pat will know of something that is out there and doesn't have to be invented for this purpose!!!

Good luck in your quest,

Jamie

P.S.

It could be as simple as a hard boiled egg.

Isabel,

I was re-reading the posts when I also started thinking that the reason you may be feeling lightheaded is that by going so long between meals could be screwing up your sugar too. Your metabolism could be thrown off track by going so long between meals. This could be dangerous and might effect your driving etc.

Be careful, and try to get in touch with Pat to get her professional point of view.

Thank's guys. I will try to find a protien bar that doesn't have too much sugar or fat. My eating times are only effected by my work hours. If I can eat half a protien bar or maybe a little cottage cheese at my desk I think I'll be fine. Yesterday, I had a sliver of leftover meatloaf as a snack. I try to stay aware of how I am feeling at all times since I know the effect blood sugars can have. This has only been an issue for the past couple of weeks since I've been working non-stop. I am begining to see a light at the end of the tunel with the hiring of 3 new people, we are slated to be fully stafffed again by the end of the summer. I look forward to getting my life back soon. Cross your fingers. LOL

HI ALL

YOU ALL GAVE GREAT IDEAS ON HOW TO HELP WITH THE HUNGER. i DO AGREE THAT GOING 8 HOURS WITHOUT SOME NUTRITION WOULD MAKE ANYONE HUNGRY AND THAT A SNACK WOULD BE GOOD. i WOULD SUGGEST A SNACK THAT HAS PROTEIN AND SOME CARBOHYDRATE BUT BE LESS THAN 150 CALORIES. IDEAS: CHEESE AND CRACKERS, COTTAGE CHEESE AND NUTS, PEANUT BUTTER AND CRACKERS. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Yes, thank you for replying. Tonight I took a diner hour instead of a lunch hour so I was able to have a meal at a reasonable time. It doesn't usually work out that way, but today it did. See you soon.

Hey Isabel~ I keep a jar of peanut butter in my desk with diposable spoons. I bring in apples to eat with it. Also I will snack on a string cheese and a piece of a piece of fruit (lord knows I am not eating the whole thing). I also pack red peppers, any porable 'sweet' veggie to help. Cheese and crackers are great also. I use wheat thins and cheddar: YUM!

Thank you. I have also found a way to eat on the go. I have discovered something called a "Sammie" from Quiznos. The Chicken Cantina only has 200 calories. They are like a small flat bread pita with chicken and vegies that is grilled. It only costs two bucks! They have another one that is 200 calories and 2 more that are 300. One of those is a whole meal. I don't eat them every day. I keep Lean Cuisine in the freezer here, too. I really didn't care for the peanut butter on toast or crackers. I'd rather eat a meal than a snack, but I have to do what I have to do.
