Okay I have to share this story with all of you because you will all "GET IT"
I am at my daughters field day this week and a women I am friendly with says to me "Wow you look wonderful!" What have to been doing? So I tell her I had Gastric Bypass surgery. She is very happy for me and the lady next to her (who mind you I wasn't talking to) pipes up with "Oh thats too drastic" What did you do that for?? And then follows with "it's too late now but let me tell you what I do" (OK did I ask???) Get this>>>she tells me I should have been eating alot of watermelon and a glass of water before each meal!!!! Oh my goodness if this Einsteins little secret gets out she is going to put Dr. Allam out of business in no time!!!! Let me finish this little tale by telling you that Einstein is over 300 pounds-YOU CAN"T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!! PEOPLE ARE NUTS!!!!! I held my tongue because their were children around-I really wanted to send her for some mental help!~!!
I had to share this story because I am still in shock!

You’re good Lee I would have turned around and said Oh really and how much have you lost by eating watermelon? Then I would have followed up with I tried that once and in fact I have tried them all and most of them never lasted more then a day.
Then I would have tried this approach if she still was listening in to my conversation I would have said to the person I was talking to she is right it is drastic but once you make up your mind that this is going to be the last thing you try to lose the weight then you go for it. Then I would have said to her that it was the best decision I have made for myself in a long time and I would do it again in a heartbeat. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.
People who are uneducated about things will always say things that are dumb when they have no idea about something. So Lee be prepared I am sure it won't be the last time you will hear someone say Oh that’s to drastic or other things about the surgery. As long as you know in your heart that you did the right thing for yourself then don't worry about people like that.;)

I've got a story to add. Shortly after my gastric bypass I was at my primary doctor's office for a routine matter. Her most brainless nurse tells me "people die from that surgery" in fact over my next few visits she repeated that same grim news. Needless to say I ended up having a panic attack when my blood pressure was high and her words were echoing in my ears. I spoke to the doctor about her stupid comments but this "nurse" continues to be incompetent in everything I ask of her. How do stupid people get to be in the medical field? I love my primary MD but her staff sucks!!! They're proving themselves again as I'm trying to get clearance for my panniculectomy. My chart still sits on the doctor's desk because the nurses don't see the relevance of my requests for her to proceed with the process necessary for my pre-approval for surgery. Are they stupid or jealous - trying to put a wrench in the works for me again? Darla

I have to add, that when I tell people (mostly strangers) how I've lost my weight (which I've never hidden that fact from people, friends or family), they sometimes look at me funny and say (in an odd, yet still negative tone) "Really?"
For the folks that have told me how "drastic" gastric bypass is, and some (who work in doctor's offices that I've been in with my mom to) think the "death rate" for gastric bypass is "so high," and that they've NEVER heard a "positive story" from anyone who has gone through it! Luckily I had my before and after pictures with me and showed them! The ladies were shocked! Then I praised Dr. Allam to the heavens about how wonderful a surgeon he is, and how successful his patients are, that shut them up, and one lady said. "Wow, it sure is nice to hear a positive story about gastric bypass for a change." To add one more thing about the surgery being "drastic," I told a woman I've known since high school (my English teacher), that it may be drastic, but I had to save my life, and nothing else I could do would make me lose the weight I needed to, and I added that "if you lost all that weight, would you WANT to regain it all?" She said "That's a really good point, and I never thought of it that way." I wasn't preachy with her but was very postive to her about it.
I hope she considers it, because she mentioned being interested in the lap band. I told her Dr. Allam's name.....so maybe she might do it!
I was "sold" when I went to my first support group meeting on January 17th (I think) 2007. Everyone at the meeting (of say 50 people) got up and told how they were doing and how much they lhad ost. The weight range of loss was from 95-160 pounds, for EVERYONE! I knew right then I was doing the right thing for myself, and had chosen the best surgeon there is!
Had to share! LOL! Sorry for rambling...:D
Hugs,
Cathy

I had to reply to this one because most uneducated people seem to think that surgery whether lap band or gastric by pass is considered the "easy way out". Most of us have been on the weight loss roller coaster our entire lives and people who never had a weight issue don't understand the emotional and physical termoil we have put ourselves (and our families) through. Every diet - every pill that was old or new. A constant struggle. I am so happy with my decision as is my husband who also had the surgery. I can look in the mirror and like who I see!!!! I bless Dr. Allam.
For the most part people have been supportive-it's the ones that have no idea what they are talking about that make me nuts-

Hi everyone,
I guess it's up to us to set everyone straight. All of us can educate these people and tell them our own stories (in a nice way, of course!) and one by one help them see that they don't know what they are talking about. If you have ever been to a support group meeting of our's, you know we will tell you our experiences and are not afraid to stand up for getting the correct information out there to the uninformed public!!! So, anytime you run into this sort of ignorance, just let them know the true story.
GO GET EM GUYS,
Jamie

I've heard it all too...but I also get the "You look fabulous" ALOT ! As far as the surgery being "dangerous", you can get hit by a truck too! I tell everyone that asks me about the surgery that it isn't without it's risk....but neither is LIFE!
