Hey Everyone,
Somehow I got the wonderful job of informing you about last night's support group meeting, so here it goes!!
It was a small group, but it turned out to be a very interesting and informative meeting and by everyone's responses, I believe it was very a well received one.
The meeting started out with Pat discussing an article titled: "Calories and Portions Do Count". This handout was about how you can consume extra calories without even realizing you are doing it. A donut hole here, a handful peanuts there etc., and before you know it you have just eaten a half a day's calories without even knowing that you have. You could probably label this as "innocent grazing". It was a very interesting topic and made you think of how many times you have done this and not even felt guilty about it because you don't realize it's being done.
The next part of the meeting was introduced by Dr. Allam asking indivuals, (some younger than others) (lol) questions about their feelings before and after surgery, and if they felt they were treated differently by family, co-workers, friends, or any other issues that concerned them. I personally find this to be a very informative discussion and it helps you to get to know the people in the group on a higher level. I also think that the new people that attend the meeting for information on either surgery get an honest view of how much we appreciate the new chance we have been given on life.
Other questions were: How long has everyone been struggling with a weight problem, did it come from pregnancy, insecurity, family habits (such as parents overfeeding or over-rewarding a child), etc.?
The meeting was a hit, (other than Dr. Allam putting his foot in his mouth a couple of times) and I would like to see more topics like this in the future.
Please help us out by posting your thoughts on the website and if I forgot anything, please add it so others can benefit from it too.
Thanks all,
Jamie
