Hi everyone,
I found a wonderful article in the WLS Lifestyles Magazine, April 2007 issue. It's called, "How to Stop Weight Re-Gain -A Nutritional Perspective", by Diana Rosa, MS, RD. http://www.wlslifestyles.com/e-newsletter.htm
The thing that struck a chord in me was the mention of "soft calories". These include soft or liquid calorie dense foods that pass rapidly through the stomach pouch, leaving you feeling hungry an hour later. Typical foods include: chips, pretzels, cookies, breads.....foods that dissolve quickly in water. Simple carbohydrate foods. The foods we ALL seem to go back to.
The article recommends that we do a simple litmus test: Take a cup of water, add 1 tsp. white vinegar, put a small amount of the food you are "testing" into the water. You will see that the food dissolves quickly. Try the same test with a piece of protein-based food (meat, egg, cheese). You will see that this will not dissolve for hours.
The same principle applies to our stomach pouches. Protein foods stay in the pouch longer, and therefore, keep us feeling full longer.
Let me know how this works for you. I know I am concentrating on more protein and less carbs this weekend, just to see if I feel a difference.
Enjoy the holiday. See you soon.
